Disney Dining Tips @ Hollywood Studios

Oh Hollywood Studios, you are an awkward park that I do not enjoy.  Of all the parks I would say this is my least favorite with the least diverse food offerings.  Granted this park is going through a major re-haul soon so hopefully with that will come changes to dining options.  My other gripe with this park is its weird shape and not as easy to navigate.  There is only 1 ride I like (Toy Story Midway Mania) and they just closed my all time favorite holiday show Osborne Spectacle of Lights.  Needless to say we don’t spend much time here and eat here even less but on the few occasion I have this is what I would recommend.

  • Chicken and Waffles—Its not the best chicken I’ve ever had but for you Star Wars fans, the waffles are Darth Vader waffles with chicken nuggets.  This dish, while not fancy at all, is the only place you can find chicken and waffles in a Disney Park right now.  Find this southern staple at The Backlot Express located near Star Tours.  I’m sure you can tell from the name but this is a quick service location so don’t expect anything fancy 🙂

  • Grapefruit Cake and Martini—I’ve never had either but my friend has tried both and says they are divine.  We have almost identical tastes in food so I need to get my booty over to Hollywood Brown Derby and try this stat.  I don’t know which I would like more, the martini or the cake.  Both are Brown Derby originals so probably just play it safe and try both.  I’m not sure if you can get the martini at the restaurant but you can for sure get both the cake and the martini at the Lounge which might be a better option if you just want to pop in for a drink and dessert (which I would highly recommend).  The Brown Derby Restaurant and Lounge are located at the very end of Hollywood Boulevard across from Center Stage.  If you plan on eating in the restaurant advance reservations are highly recommended as this is a very popular dining spot at Studios.
  • Seasonal Milkshakes—My body cant really handle this much dairy but I have been DYING to try a milkshake from Min and Bill’s.  We don’t come to Hollywood Studios much so there hasn’t been an occasion to get one yet, but trust me, its on the must try list!  Flavors that have shown up have been Black Forest, Cinnamon Sweet Churro, Caramel Apple and Red Velvet Peppermint to name a few.  Min and Bill’s Dockside Diner is located on Echo Lake across from the center stage.  Its a boat, you cant miss it.

  • Adult Beverages—Hollywood Studios really is the best at keeping their drinks updated for the seasons, which is why no 1 drink is listed here.  I’ve had a few of the holiday drinks owing to Osborne Lights but again, we don’t spend much time here so I haven’t had them all.  Luckily there are quite a few drink carts around the park to help you get your adult drink on but there is one permanent location (for now) where you can always find something strong.  High Octane is the “lounge” where you can get all kinds of drinks but do yourself a favor and try one of the seasonal offerings.  Don’t be basic and get something standard 🙂  Better get there soon though who knows how long this location will be around.  High Octane is located on the Streets of America near the Honey I Shrunk the Kids Attraction.  The Streets of America will soon be removed to make way for the Star Wars themed area of the park.  While it has not been confirmed High Octane or Backlot Express will be closing, its safe to assume changes will be made in the area.

  • 50’s Style Dining—Want to be told to eat your veggies?  Dying for some of mom’s classic home cooking?  Look no further than 50’s Prime Time Cafe.  Meatloaf, Pot Roast, Pork Chops, and more you can find it here.  I really like the meatloaf but the pot pie has peaked my interest a time of two (I just haven’t been in the mood).  Make sure and save room for the Peanut Butter & Jelly shake, its a house specialty.  Oh, and if you don’t want your sever to tell you to get your elbows off the table or dish out “punishments” make sure and let them know.  Its all fun and games but some people are sticks in the mud and want the food without the experience.  I mean why go if you don’t want the full joy that is 50’s Prime Time Cafe but whatever.  You can find this quirky restaurant on your way to the Indiana Jones Stunt Show behind Echo Lake.  Advance dining reservations are strongly recommended as this location offers Fantasmic Dining packages and can book up quickly.

  • Drive In Theater—Another quirky restaurant (which needs advance dining reservations as well) offering pretty basic fare but with a twist.  You eat your meal in a retro “car” and get to watch clips of old black and white sci-fi movies.  My dad loves this place because, duh, the old sci-fi movies.  Personally the menu here is a bit random and doesn’t really flow together but I’ve had the burgers and they have been pretty decent.  Don’t expect the best meal you’ve ever had here, its more for the experience than anything else.  Sci-Fi Diner is located down Commissary Lane behind Star Wars: Path of the Jedi.

We have done all the restaurants except Brown Derby, which we have ADRs for July. I want to try the grapefruit cake too. Our favorites are the sample platter at ’50s Prime Time Cafe’, the Charred Strip Steak at Mama Melrose’s and the Macaroni and Cheese with Pulled Pork at Min and Bill’s Dockside Diner.
