Classic Margarita (Foodie Friday #37)

A few weeks ago I had a group of friends over for a belated Cinco de Mayo celebration and game night.  What is a cinco de mayo celebration without some margaritas!!!  I actually decided to make these super last minute, originally I wanted to do Sangria.  Our group has done Sangria before so I opted to do something different for us.  Let me just say, I made a about 3/4 of a gallon and between the 7 of us that were drinking it was all gone by the end of the night!  Fiesta ole!!


The below recipe will get you a little less than a 1/2 gallon but you can easily double as I did, or pair down as well.  Fair warning, this is strong stuff so make sure and serve over ice to dilute.

Classic Margarita


Servings: 7             Prep Time: 20 min           Chill Time: 1 hour             Difficulty: Easy


  • 3c Silver (or Blanco) Tequila (don’t use a crappy brand, those hangovers are no joke)
  • 1 1/2c Orange Liqueur
  • 1 1/2c Freshly Squeezed Lime Juice (about 20 regular limes)
  • 1/2 recipe simple syrup (see below)
  • 5 limes for garnish (sliced into wedges)
  • Kosher salt for garnish


  • 1 cup Water
  • 1 cup Sugar


Either the night before or a few hours before you need it, prepare the simple syrup:  In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, stir together water and sugar. Bring to a boil, stirring, until sugar has completely dissolved. Remove from heat and allow to cool to room temperature

To make the margarita:  Combine tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice and simple syrup in a pitcher and chill until ready to serve.

To serve the margarita:  Pour enough salt into a shallow dish to dip glasses into.  Take a lime wedge and cut a small slit in the middle.  Glide the lime wedge around the entire top of the glass.  Dip the glass into the salt and swirl a little to cover the glass.  Add ice (DO NOT scoop ice with a glass, use a plastic or styrofoam cup so you don’t break glass into the ice) and pour margarita into glass.  Place lime wedge on the rim of the glass and enjoy!  Squeeze in additional lime juice from the wedge if desired.

Now its a fiesta 😀
